Following the death of her son, Charlie, while on a study abroad in Belgium, college professor Marie finds herself unable to cope. Returning to work, Marie tries to deal with her fears and reconnect with her husband, Joe, but she can’t face what happened to her son. With the help of her psychologist, Dr. Weber, Marie attempts to overcome her fears, so that they can fly to the trial of the terrorist who killed Charlie, in Brussels. Can she face her fears with the aftermath of such traumatic events?
The play received the first reading at Phoenix Theatre Festival of New American Theatre, directed by Brian Foley, and with Brenda Foley, Kent Burnham, Chad McCluskey, and Jai Raja. The second major reading at the Theater Artists Studio in Phoenix, Arizona, included Maureen Dias, and Lesley Tutnick. The O’Neill Theatre Conference Festival honored the play with a 2017 semi-finalist award. Dramaturgy assistance included work by Kristin Idaszak, Jeremy Stoller, Susannah Stengel, and most recently, Ryan Campbell.
In 2018, Athena Theatre selected the play for Athena Reads, and read the play at the Dramatists Guild Foundation, with the following cast: John Carhart, Dan Jaffe, John Hardin, Marilyn Oran, Maria Wolf, and Vin Scialla.
Athena Theatre is deepening our relationship with our playwrights. We have selected one play from Athena Reads 2018 for a workshop production with the goal of moving this piece toward full production.
