Athena Theatre is deepening our relationship with our playwrights. We have selected one play from Athena Reads 2018 for a staged reading with the goal of moving this piece toward full production.
Ellie Wolcott, a Southern Baptist woman fearing a tepid and lonely old age, attempts to reunite her daughter, Kate, with long time paramour Alan John in order to salvage her remaining years with some semblance of dignity. When Kate shows up with an unexpected “guest”, Ellie is forced to confront many demons, including her ideas about race, biology, bigotry, and sexuality.
Understanding and Compassion
We as a species are sorely short on that in so many ways. Whether we encounter differences in thoughts about race, religion, sexuality, or political views, I believe our best approach to healing is one person, one family, one Theater at a time. I began the writing of Sweet Texas Reckoning with the mission to explore these ideas by examining the plight of Ellie Wolcott. Through the damaged eyes of both Ellie and her daughter Kate, I am hoping we may see some repair within ourselves, and hopefully, see the world at large with clearer eyes and a more profound hope. I believe we have come a long way, but there is so much of our path yet to be traveled. I am so very honored to share my play with you in hopes of creating a better future for us all.
